I know a lot of you love listening to Shaykh Mishary Rashid al-Afasy’s recitation, and I have already gotten questions from some of you regarding the tunes/maqamat he uses. Sh. Mishary Rashid is actually a master of the maqamat, and uses a wide range of maqamat in his recitation. This of course is in addition to his amazing tajweed and his knowledge of the the various qira’at/riwayat.

In this post I’ll provide several audio/video examples of Shaykh Mishary Rashid al-Afasy reciting in the three maqamat that I demonstrated in my original video (Maqam Bayati, Hijaz, and Nahawand). One of my goals for this site is to help you to identify and become familiarized to the various maqamat. It’s a lot more daunting to think “I want to recite like Afasy” or “I want to recite like Minshawi” than it is to learn one or two of their tune patterns and then go from there.

So here is a breakdown of some of Shaykh al-Afasy’s many tunes:

Maqam Nahawand

Click here for an example of Maqam Nahawand (beginning of Surah al-Anbiya)

Here’s another example – surah al-Fatihah … I love this one by the way:

Maqam Hijaz

Click here for an example of Maqam Hijaz (Surah ad-Duha)

Another example of Maqam Hijaz – complete with graphic video-tafseer

Maqam Bayati

Click here for an example of Maqam Bayati (beginning of Surah al-Infitar)
Click here for another example (surah at-Takathur)

Hope you enjoyed the examples. For those of you who can’t yet hear the difference between the different tunes, try listening one more time, or even two or three. Your ear for this will only get stronger by listening.

Stay tuned for Part 2 – more Mishary Rashid coming your way soon!
